Your BuzzCap sits on the post, the sun goes down, and you light it. About five hours later, the flame says goodnight. Here is everything you need to know about the fuel that makes it happen.
TL;DR
- Use clean-burning fuel made for outdoor oil torches.
- Fill the 12 oz canister no more than three-quarters full.
- One fill burns about 5 hours in a BuzzCap.
- Fill on a flat surface, and never while the canister sits in the cap.
- Pick citronella, eucalyptus, or unscented, based on your evening.
What tiki torch fuel does a BuzzCap use?
Every BuzzCap holds a 12 oz canister with a fiberglass wick. The canister runs on oil torch fuel, the same kind of fuel used in tiki torches and outdoor lanterns.
We pair ours with FireFly Tiki Torch Fuel. It is clean-burning oil made for outdoor oil torches, with a low-smoke, steady burn. Use fuel made for oil torches. Skip gasoline, and skip anything that was not made to burn in a torch.
Citronella, eucalyptus, or unscented?
You get three choices, and none of them changes how the BuzzCap works.
- Citronella: The classic backyard mosquito-evening scent. Most people start here.
- Eucalyptus: A fresher scent profile for people who want something different.
- Unscented: Pure ambiance with no fragrance. Good if you are sensitive to smells or serving dinner outside.

How much fuel goes in a BuzzCap?
Fill the canister no more than three-quarters full. That leaves room in the canister so the fuel does not overflow.
Do it on a flat surface, and never while the canister is still in the cap. Pour it in the garage or on the patio table, wipe up any drips, and then set it back on the post.
How long does one fill last?
One fill burns about 5 hours in a BuzzCap. That covers a full dinner and the conversation that runs long afterward.
Burn time shifts with weather and wick height. A breezy night burns faster than a calm one. If the flame runs tall and smoky, lower the wick.
How many fills are in a bottle?
FireFly comes in two sizes on our site:
- 32 oz: Good for a few fill-ups.
- 1 gallon: Made for people who run several BuzzCaps all season.
Ordering a six-pack or a twelve-pack of caps? Go with the gallon.
How to fill your BuzzCap, step by step
- Let the flame go out completely. Use the snuffer to put it out, then wait for the canister to cool.
- Lift the canister out of the cap.
- Set it on a flat surface.
- Pour fuel to the three-quarter line. The wide-mouth opening makes this easy.
- Wipe off any spilled fuel.
- Set the canister back in the cap, then light it.
Storing your fuel
Keep the bottle closed, upright, and out of reach of kids and pets. Store it away from heat and open flame, such as the grill or fire pit.
Need spare canisters?
If you run more than one BuzzCap, extra canisters make refills faster. Fill a spare in advance and swap it in. The 12 Ounce Oil Torch Replacement Canister 6 Pack includes wicks and snuffer caps. Canisters do not include fuel.
